Security Alert: BGP Hijacking Exploited to Deliver Malicious Virtualizor Updates
In a sophisticated cyberattack, threat actors successfully executed a Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) hijacking campaign targeting Virtualizor, a widely used Virtual Private Server (VPS) management platform. By manipulating BGP routing tables, the attackers redirected traffic meant for Virtualizor's legitimate update servers to a malicious infrastructure they controlled. This allowed them to distribute compromised software updates containing backdoors directly to unsuspecting hosting providers.
The Mechanics of the Attack
BGP is the protocol that binds the global internet together, routing traffic across independent networks (Autonomous Systems). Because BGP historically lacks built-in cryptographic validation, malicious actors can sometimes 'announce' IP prefixes they do not own.
In this incident, the attackers announced the IP range of Virtualizor's update servers, causing global ISPs to route update requests to the attackers' servers. The malicious update payload gave the threat actors remote command execution over the targeted VPS host nodes.
